Hey BD, I have an old BOSS BR1180CD Digital Recording Studio from 2002 and it's great for recording song ideas/demos and practicing. Mine is only 8 tracks but the newer ones have lots more tracks and features. You can record, mix, master, burn discs etc...pretty much everything you would need. It also has a great built-in stereo rhythm machine so you don't have to use two of the tracks for recording an external drum machine. There are a ton more features, too many to list here, check them out on the BOSS website... www.bossus.com

tascam is one of the only companies around still making these little machines of any quality from what i've heard. they are straight forward to use and convenient. they make excellent personal musical scratch pads so to speak.
If your looking to get something to just get the quick idea down or whatnot and are not extremely concerned with the quality of the recording being professional, i'd suggest finding an old Tascam analog tape 4-track on ebay. The mk414 can typically be found used for around 50 bucks.
