Hi I would suggest getting a mac and use that for nothing but music production.
As for software, i would suggest Pro-Tools 7

Yeah, I've got a buddy who goes to school for audio production in Boston and he's got a Mac specifically for working on his school work since they all use Macs at his college for their audio producing. I still have yet to embrace the Mac but since I became familiar with them with the music department at the college I went to, I'm increasingly considering getting one just for my music. Thanks for the reply too George, your input definitely helps in my future decision to pick up a Mac (pending my future financial situation too, of course) lol I've still gotta work on upgrading my amps/head/pedals, pretty much everything. lol

I'd be happy finding a decent amp for a grand around here. lol Everything's so expensive! But I guess that's why I took on a second job. lol No pain, no gain.

I'd definantly suggest a mac, even though I'm a pc user. Lol you know what I'm saving for first? True temperament on my guitar!

i would suggest a PC used for nothing other than music. you can build a fantastic PC that is MORE than capable of running what you need for much less money than you can get a Mac with roughly the same specs. If you plan to go into the recording industry a mac may benefit you, simply because you'll be ahead of the curve as far as key commands and the general functionality of a Mac when it comes time to work on your project at the school studio. but if i were you, i'd keep away from them.
As far as DAW goes, personally i'd strongly recommend Cubase/Nuendo over Protools as well, taking into consideration the time i've spent with both. Cubase in my experience has proven to be way ahead of the ballgame than Protools. Protools (what once was a revolutionary program) is really beginning to lack more and more in comparison to other DAWs in my opinion.
