I signed up for a jazz ensemble class for an extra credit and I'm stoked about it. Problem is, I've listened to either metal or instrumental rock like Vai and Satriani for most of my playing years, and am just starting to get into some jazzy things.
I know major and minor diatonic/pentatonic patterns in various keys, what other scales should I check out?
Any other tips for jazz improv?
Thanks!

Major scales definitely as well as all the different modes (lydian, ionian, mixolydian, dorian, aeolian, phrygian and locrian). That should keep you busy for a while .
