Hands size or the lenght or thickness of the fingers is not a big problem, what matters is the kind of technique you adapt and develop with them.
There are guys like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Jim Root to name a few that have huge hands with very long fingers and guys like Michael Romeo or Johnny Hiland with small hands and short fingers and can play as clean and fast as the other three so size of hands are a very subjective thing, but indeed long fingers allow to do more stretched chord shapes or licks(like those of Paul that can take on 8 or 9 frets of separation and at very high speeds)
One thing that should be considered, even more if you're starting to play, is to get a guitar that feels confortable while playing, if you have small hands you can't play a 27" scale neck guitar, even the standard 25" scale may feel big, if you play with those without having enough sized hands you can even hurt yourself, for a more comfortable and easy playing use a 24" scale neck guitar or a 22 1/2" or 23 1/2" those are smaller guitars with a different feel and comfort, so just compare between them and see what happens and how do you feel.
You can get a JEM or a PGM from Ibanez but keep in mind that those guitars were designed according the fisical conditions of those guitar players, Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert, both with big hands and long fingers and standing in 6'4" at least Generally speaking If you're 5' 1" you'll find those guitars a little hard to play but don't worry, if you keep practicing you'll notice that your fingers will be more stretchable in no time, but be careful, if it hurts, then something is going wrong on there.
Regards.
Cesar.
